[ARCHIVED] Proclamation Recognizing the Ocoee 1920 Election Day to be Presented on November 20

The City of Ocoee will present a special proclamation in remembrance of the tragic events that occurred in Ocoee on November 2-3, 1920.

The proclamation will be read at the Ocoee City Commission meeting on Tuesday, November 20 at 6:15 p.m., City Hall, 150 North Lakeshore Drive. The public is invited to attend.

In 1920, the historical record shows that African-American residents of West Orange County in and around what later became the City of Ocoee were grievously denied their right to vote, their civil rights, their properties, and their very lives in a series of unlawful acts perpetrated by a white mob and government officials. The city believes that remembering and honoring those individuals who were killed, injured, driven from their homes, and had their property taken from them is a core requirement for ensuring that such acts do not occur again.

The City of Ocoee has taken steps toward accountability and reconciliation of its painful past. Today, Ocoee is a diverse city that celebrates and embraces all ethnicities and cultures. The city has moved forward to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for its residents, businesses and visitors. In 2020, to memorialize the 100-year anniversary of the events that occurred on November 2-3, 1920, the city will hold a commemorative event with the goal of healing and bringing closure to a 100 year old chapter in the history of Ocoee.
